Lindale

 Lindale

Lindale was founded in 1871. It is located about 15 miles east of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was named after Samuel Lindale, a landowner in the area. Lindale started with just 300 residents. However, it became one of the most important cities in East Texas, especially during the Great Depression. The city's economy grew because it was close to railroad lines. Most of the city's industries were related to railroad lines. By 1939, the city had almost 14,000 residents. In 1946, the city had a population of almost 17,000. The city had a population of over 20,000 in the 1990s.

When Lindale was founded in 1871, its first name was Caddo. When the settlers came to the area, they found it was occupied by Indians called Caddoes. These Indians had lived in the area for hundreds of years. When the Republic of Texas came into existence, the Caddoes became the property of the government, and the state gave them $500 for their land. They received another $1,000 after they built a railroad through their property. By 1900, all of the Caddoe people had been moved away from the area. Today, there are no traces of their former homes. The name of the county was changed in 1880.

Some people believe that the area around Lindale has the highest concentration of prehistoric sites in the state. It's true that there are quite a few Indian mounds, burial grounds, and other archaeological sites in the area. Most of the sites are located just north of the Trinity River. You can view the mounds from a trail near the old cemetery on West Main Street. There are also many sites on the east side of the river just south of the railroad tracks.
